Live podcasting events are fairly common now, at least amongst popular talk radio style shows. For example, the Gilmore Guys have been touring all summer: LA, Austin, NYC and Philadelphia. I listen to these live recordings, but I never gave much thought about traveling to attend one. Last month, Relevant Podcast announced it would celebrate its 10th Anniversary by hosting a live event in Orlando.
Jordan's been listening to the Relevant Podcast since 2005 and expressed a desire to go the live event. After looking into it, we were able to secure two tickets. I then had to figure out if I could get off work last-minute. After rearranging my schedule and working (too many) days in a row, we jumped in our Camry and hit the open road!
The taping began at 8 pm but food trucks were parked and ready to serve at 6 pm. We ate and chatted with other fans of the show while waiting for the evening to begin. I am convinced food trucks have the best food. Jordan ordered the Hawaiian BBQ Chicken and I had the Hawaiian Pulled Pork. Over Rice you were excellent!
I thought we had traveled far but guests were in attendance from places such as: London, California and Michigan (driving 20 hours!). One girl even boarded her first airplane just to attend this event. Crazy!
I was SO excited to find out Shauna Niequist was going to be in attendance. She is a semi-regular guest, but always takes time off from the podcast during the summer. She is as lovely as you might imagine.
The cast kept to a semi-truncated version of their regular format. This was an anniversary show after all! Audience participation was encouraged, games, and special guests were sprinkled throughout their usual elements.
Throughout the past ten years, members of the cast have come and gone but I really enjoy their current line-up (Cameron Strang, Jessey Carey, Joy Eggerichs, Shauna Niequist, and Eddie Kaufholz). Not everyone is a current Relevant Magazine staff member or even a Floridian, so it was fun seeing them interact face to face with one another. Usually, the producer splices in music cues and extra interviews. But this was as raw as it gets! It was so fun.
Earlier in the year, a challenge was given to Jesse Carey. Or more specifically, he requested a test of mental endurance. Listeners wrote in different suggestions and eventually it was decided. Jesse would listen to the entire catalog of Nickelback on loop for seven days straight, all in the name of charity of course. It got picked up by Time, Buzzfeed, Billboard and even Huffington Post. In the end, over $36,000 was raised for Charity: Water.
To round out the challenge, Jesse and Cameron were going to see Nickelback live BUT the tour was canceled due to an injury. No fear though, Jesse ended the night showcasing his newfound skill, singing in Chad Kroeger's place. ;-) Jesse did a valiant job but, seriously, Nickelback songs are just the worst! Ha.
