I have watched a lot of What Not To Wear in my twenties. The much beloved and greatly missed TLC makeover show taught me a lot about the importance of proportion, fit and personal style. Some items in my closet (such as my two pairs of overalls) might not make their cut but this blazer? Totally.
I almost got rid of this blazer a few years ago. It was one of the last pieces I bought for my previous job but I ended up leaving the job before ever wearing it. Something in me (maybe Clinton and Stacy's voices) kept me from tossing it in a donation bag during one of our "moving purges." I am so glad I didn't because it is an extremely useful piece of clothing to own.
When thinking back to 19-year-old Catherine's version of what 29-year-old Catherine would wear, it is this outfit: classic but still modern and trendy with the choice of jean style. Owning a lot of business casual pieces doesn't make sense for my current lifestyle, but blazers work just as well outside of the office as they do inside.
One piece of advice I took away while watching many an episode of WNTW is the importance of a finishing piece: jewelry, jackets, scarfs and hats. Accessorizing is not my strongest suit. It's not uncommon for me to spend time on my make-up and outfit selection but still walk out the door without any jewelry on (I'm working on being better at this as I do really love jewelry!). The finishing piece is what makes an outfit and jackets are a great way to amplify your look without a lot of effort.
