Welcome! I’m Catherine. For me, it's important to stretch my mind, travel far, and always have a stash of dark chocolate.

Weekend Links / / The Family Cold Season

I'm posting this Weekend Links edition a little late, but that's apropos for my week. Everyone is or has been sick all week. Phoenix's runny nose and cough started last weekend. His colds are susceptible to turning into croup so I was keeping a close eye. I bought a new humidifier. I couldn't keep our last one from growing mold. Why design a humidifier with nooks and crannies you can't keep clean?!

Phoenix's cold went through various degrees of severity. He had a slight fever Friday night, but sadly Jordan was hit the worst. I joke working at Starbucks boosts my immune system, but I actually do believe it. I felt a little achy for roughly twenty-four hours and that's pretty typical for me. Phoenix hasn't slept the greatest this week, but he has been extra cuddly. To try to keep him from running around (and thus coughing more) I put on movies and to my surprise he'd sit on my lap and watch bits and pieces.

We had to cancel our baby-sitter for Saturday night but we did manage to buy our Christmas tree (not decorated yet) and visit Porter Flea's Holiday Pop-Up Market. The market's occur seasonally and are full of local talented artists.

Onto the links!

Jordan and I were guests on two recent episodes of Vernacular Podcast. Most recently we discussed season one of The Crown. Season two premiered on Friday, which was perfect timing for us! Jordan was pretty out of it on Friday, so we dove right in to the new season.

I was feeling the need to start baking Christmas cookies. Mostly because I love cookies and I watched a lot of The Great British Bake off this week. I'm not sure what makes a Christmas cookie, but I made these snickerdoodle cookies and they were winners! Snickerdoodles feel fancy, but they are essentially sugar cookies with cream of tarter.

Tracy's spiced brown sugar pound cake reminded me I need to buy another bottle of molasses. Two of my favorite Christmas treats utilize molasses: gingerbread snacking cake and my molasses spice cookies.

I'm in love with all of Kate's DIY Minimalist Holiday Decorations. They remind me of crafts I'd do in 4-H meetings. ;-) And if you were unaware, like me, Lowes (and I'm sure Home Depot) has a free pile of tree trimmings.

It's been many years since I've participated in a White Elephant exchange BUT I have one this week. Julie's list is extremely helpful -- I laughed at the 5-10 rolls of toilet paper but also I wouldn't hate leaving a party with extra rolls of toilet paper!

Happy Weekend, all!
