A Recap of my Summer 10x10 Style Challenge
I just completed my first 10x10 style challenge! I was asked over on Instagram to do a breakdown of all of the pieces I selected. Initially I thought about sharing the process on instastories, but I quickly discovered a blog post would be far more concise!
Lee from Style Bee created the 10x10 style challenge well over a year ago. She generally hosts it with Caroline from Un-fancy, which is where I first heard about the challenge. Each time it'd pass I'd think to myself I wish I was participating. As soon as I found out the summer 10x10 timeframe I immediately began selecting my pieces and planning outfit combinations.
So, what exactly is the 10x10? It's a fun style challenge where you wear 10 pieces of clothing/shoes and style them into 10 different looks over 10 days. I followed Lee's rough guideline:
- 2 Pairs of Shoes (1 heel + 1 flat)
- 4 Tops
- 1 Dress
- 2 Bottoms
- 1 Top Layer
I swapped the top layer for an extra bottom, as no one (at least me!) is layering in the Nashville heat. This is all for fun, so if you don't want to include shoes or outer layers, you do you! As you'll see I sort of "cheated" by wearing a different pair of shoes to a wedding.
Now, let me explain my 10 pieces.

- 4 tops: blank tank from Carly Jean Los Angeles, black top with eyelet sleeves from CJLA (similar), cobalt blue button up from Uniqlo (similar), Winona tee from Idea
- 3 bottoms: denim shorts from CJLA (similar), wide leg crop pant from Everlane, coral culottes from COS
- 1 dress: black/white maxi from CJLA (similarish)
- 2 shoes: saltwater sandals, nude clogs
I knew to complete this challenge I'd need to plan everything out in-advance. I mentioned this on Instagram, but most of the outfits I didn't actually wear in realtime. I thought through which days Jordan would be available to take photos and batched a few at a time. BUT, I accomplished what I set out to do: discover new outfit combinations (and realize I have enough).
When I'm home with Phoenix, during the summer, I am wearing mom play clothes (which is essentially its own capsule of 2 pairs of denim shorts and 5 tank tops). There is no point in dressing up when its 95° and 85% humidity!!
But, I now work in an office 2 days a week so I wanted to create more (creative) work appropriate outfits so you'll see that reflected a bit in my outfit combinations. The more casual outfits I created are ones I'd wear if the three of us were doing something together around town.
Why should you participate? It's a great way to realize how few pieces one needs to own to create a stylish wardrobe. Maybe you've gained/lost weight or changed lifestyles (now work in a corporate setting) and feel like you need a complete wardrobe overhaul. That is certainly how I've felt since having Phoenix. 10 pieces is the perfect launching place. I was surprised how many more combinations I could have styled (though I think that'd be more challenging if I was using top layers).
Overall I am really pleased with how every outfit turned out. I do think some of them would have looked better with a darker pair of shoes. I saved up for my Nina Z clogs during my pregnancy and they are so comfortable, but I do think owning a black pair (probably closed toe) will serve me well in the fall/winter. Especially to the office!
The standout piece are my Everlane pants. I could wear them everyday. They are amazing and I am now purchasing them in black. They add a little flair to any outfit. They are work appropriate, but also casual enough to wear everyday.
I also realized I really love the way I look in fitted tops with a wide leg bottom. As much as I like the idea of loose fitting tops with skinny bottoms, it never quite works on me.
